Five KiwiSaver tips to maximise your savings

The GoalsGetter Multi-Manager KiwiSaver Scheme enables you – or your financial adviser – to create personalised, diversified KiwiSaver portfolios calibrated to your individual savings needs. Here five KiwiSaver tips to help you approach your retirement savings effectively.

The Scheme, and the wider GoalsGetter platform, are operated by Amova (formerly Nikko AM), whose expertise is trusted by institutional investors all around the world.

Don’t turn your nose up at free money

Although the Government recently announced it will be halving its annual contribution from next year, this will still be available to those earning less than $180,000 p/a. To mitigate this change, it’s increasing the minimum employer contribution to 3.5 per cent from April 1, 2026. But if you’re not in KiwiSaver, you’ll miss out on this “free money” altogether.

Don’t be afraid to be bold

We recently added two new aggressive funds to our GoalsGetter multi-manager KiwiSaver Scheme – providing for further diversification within the high-growth category. The move was driven largely by demand from advisers, who report that they are increasingly advocating high-growth strategies for clients for the period between purchasing their first home and their mid-fifties, as they say this extended timeframe allows them to ride out the volatility of investment cycles.

Do protect yourself with diversification

Aggressive doesn’t mean reckless though! You can still manage risk by investing in quality diversified aggressive or high growth funds – just like the ones you’ll find on our GoalsGetter Multi-Manager KiwiSaver Scheme!

Do build an emergency fund

It may seem counterintuitive to divert savings away from your retirement, but having at least three months’ living expenses set aside in an easily accessible savings vehicle (like, say, the Amova NZ Cash Fund) will prevent you from having to dip into your retirement fund in the event of unforeseen hardship.

And don’t forget to have fun

Financial freedom gives you more choices in life. A well-structured savings and investment plan can provide financial freedom sooner – so don’t be afraid to enjoy what you’ve worked so hard for.
